Pasay City, Metro Manila, Julyย 28, 2023 โ€” ARISE Philippines, a UNDRR led Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, successfully conducted the webinar titled “Unraveling the Synergy of Space Science in Disaster Resilience Technology and Innovations.” The event, held on a Friday, brought together a diverse audience, including distinguished partners, renowned speakers, and various participants representing different sectors.
The webinar, held in celebration of the National Disaster Resilience Month, aimed to explore the pivotal role of space science and technology in ย strengthening disaster resilience efforts. The participants were from various public and private sectors locally and internationally, such as the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST Philippines), the Philippine Space Agency, the Office of Civil Defense PH (OCD), WIN DRR, Kiu Global, SM Prime Holdings, Inc., and SpaceBase Limited New Zealand, as well the academe led by Asia Pacific College.
The event was opened by Vice Admiral Alexander P. Pama, Co-Chair of ARISE Philippines, who emphasized the pioneering nature of the efforts on Space Science and Technology as applied to DRRM and resilience to strengthen our abilities to address the current DRRM and Climate Change challenges. This was followed by inspirational messages given by Undersecretary Ariel F. Nepomuceno, Executive Director of NDRRMC, and Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano, Jr., Director General of the Philippine Space Agency.
The event was highlighted by a keynote message delivered by Honorable Renato U. Solidum Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology Secretary and Vice Chair of NDRRMC for Prevention and Mitigation, who provided profound insights into the immense potential of space-based technologies in disaster resilience. Secretary Solidum shared the three (3) foundational elements to help build synergies and enable interventions that lead to greater benefit namely, information, governance, and strategic planning and foresight.
The informative sessions were led by esteemed partners, Director Ariel C. Blanco from Philippine Space Agency and Ms. Emeline Paat-Dahlstrom and Mr. Eric Dahlstrom, Founders of SpaceBase Limited, who shared valuable insights on space technologies as applied in disaster resilience.
Concluding the event, Ms. Liza B. Silerio, Board Member of ARISE Global, stated in her closing remarks, “Let us all join the mission towards a world where space science and disaster resilience harmoniously coexist, safeguarding the well-being of humanity for generations to come.”
